David Hare: Press

Demonstration
David Hare
Indie
2006

For over a decade singer/songwriter David Hare has been honing his musical talents in Los Angeles, performing acoustic solo sets throughout Southern California in coffee houses to concert theatres. He has opened for members of The Eagles and The Jacksons and credits such artists as Stone Temple Pilots, YES, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, The Black Crowes, David Bowie, Sheryl Crow, and particularly, the late Tommy Bolin as major influences.

David’s honesty and depth as an artist has gained the respect of many of his contemporaries within the songwriting community. With the completion of his album Demonstration, self-released on his eponymous label, David shares his wide-ranging songwriting, guitar and vocal talents with the world. All of the songs on Demonstration are original, written and performed by the man himself. The resulting collection ranges from "Treaty Betrayed", an alternative rock track based on “an unusual, yet distinctive rhythmic assault of drums and acoustic guitar” about the end of a relationship, “to the simple acoustic pop guitar and vocal performance” of the love ballad "Waking Dream." "Time Heals" showcases earnest lyrics about a broken heart and enchanting electric guitar. Perhaps the best song on Demonstration is the renaissance tune "Coming Home" which puts me in a Moody Blues frame of mind and was justly chosen for David’s first music video.

The opening track, “On It Goes”, features female vocalist Tracey Silvers, Steve Marshall on drums and keyboard bass and Chris Berry on guitar, not to mention these intelligent lyrics:

Enemy with a greedy soul
Tearing our world
As kingdoms come and go
See the people
Without a home
We've gotta get back now
Or we'll fall like Rome
And on it goes
Like ocean waves
From the gutters up
To the corporate slaves
My world
Is our world
and our world
Is Your world

On each of the ten following enduring songs about love in all its guises, all guitars and vocals are performed solely by David blending rock, alternative and progressive folk styles. Although the lyrics on Demonstration are sometimes cliché you can forgive David Hare because they are so blatantly genuine. I love the vocal accomplishment on “S.W.A.K.”, another insistently romantic ballad and the 60’s hippy trip of “Loves Magic”. “Saying I’m Sorry’s Not Enough” tells a further tale of how love went wrong. I’m smitten with the beautiful “Kristina” and Latin-flavoured “Saying Goodbye”. Demonstration is an above average debut by a unique vocalist whose time for success has come.
